Walgreens is getting ready to compete with Amazon and other retailers when it comes to prescription delivery services.

The drugstore chain announced it's partnering with FedEx to launch a next-day prescription drug delivery program called Walgreens Express.

And earlier this year, CVS Health started a similar service as well.

Experts say these can be a game-changer for people who don't have easy access to a pharmacy.

But there could be another motive behind launching the services, and that's to stay a step ahead of Amazon.

The online retail giant acquired online pharmacy PillPack earlier this year as it aims to venture into the prescription drug market -- and companies are noticing.

Walgreens Express already offers same-day delivery in some cities, including New York, Chicago and Miami.

There's a $4.99 fee for the upcoming next-day delivery, and customers will have to place their order by 4 p.m. on weekdays.
