Syrian government forces took back control of a major stretch of land along its southern border after rebel forces agreed to a ceasefire deal.

As part of the deal, opposition groups gave up their heavy weapons. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Russian allies agreed to let remaining civilians opposed to Assad's government relocate to rebel-controlled areas in northern Syria.

The recent offensive by Assad's forces has displaced hundreds of thousands of Syrians. This latest push allowed Assad to recapture a border crossing with Jordan, a main trade route.

Russian military police will now deploy along the Syria-Jordan border to enforce the ceasefire agreement.
