Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin has defeated Republican Pat Morrissey in the West Virginia Senate race.
Polls during his campaign showed moderate to strong support for Manchin despite West Virginia’s high Trump approval. The president won the state by over 40 points in 2016.
Manchin is often considered a moderate Democrat. He was the sole Democratic vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, a move that may have gained him favor with West Virginians.
This will be Manchin’s second full term in the Senate.
