Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was laid to rest Wednesday after a military funeral in Cairo.

Footage broadcast by state TV showed soldiers marching down the street ahead of a horse-drawn carriage carrying Mubarak's coffin, while cannon fire echoed in the background.

Current President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was in attendance, as well as several of Egypt's top military officials.

Mubarak died earlier this week at the age of 91 after recently undergoing surgery. He served as president of Egypt for almost 30 years. He resigned in 2011 after thousands of people protested the repression, corruption and poverty in Egypt and called for Mubarak to step down.

Later on Wednesday, Mubarak's body was transported to his family grave. Egypt declared three days of national mourning to honor his death.
