Amazon says it's planning to hire thousands more employees in the U.S. to help meet a surge in demand amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The company said in a blog post Monday it's opening 100,000 new full-time and part-time positions in its fulfillment centers and delivery network.

In addition to creating those new roles, Amazon will also temporarily increase pay for all employees in fulfillment centers, transportation, stores and deliveries. Workers in the U.S., Europe and Canada will get a bump in hourly pay through the end of April.

Over the weekend, Amazon warned customers it was sold out of many household staples, and it could take longer than normal to get deliveries.

Countries around the world have taken drastic measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus, including closing schools, shutting down nonessential businesses and ordering citizens to stay home. According to Johns Hopkins, there were more than 185,000 confirmed cases of the virus globally early Tuesday.
